Furthermor, Prof. Dong Jun LIM of the Catholic University will discuss the treatment of Graves' disease, the most common disease of hyperthyroidism. Clinical Update 2: Hormone Replacement Therapy as an Osteoporosis Prevention and Treatment Day 3, October 29(Sat), 2022 / 10:20-11:50 / Room 1 Overview
Organizer: Beom-Jun KIM (University of Ulsan, Korea)
This clinical update session will cover 3 important topics in managing osteoporosis. First, Prof. Suzanne Jan DE BEUR from Johns Hopkins Univesity will give a lecture titled “Managing Puzzling Osteoporosis Patient”. In osteoporosis, not only postmenopausal women but also secondary osteoporosis caused by drugs or underlying diseases or metabolic bone disease caused by genetic problems account for a significant part. She will share her experiences and literature review on those difficult cases in the aspect of diagnosis and treatment of together with difficult cases of primary osteoporosis. The second speaker, Professor Park from the College of Dentistry, Yonsei University, will give a lecture entitled how to prevent osteonecrosis of the jaw in patients taking anti-resorptive drugs.
Among osteoporosis drugs, especially in bisphosphonate and denosumab, which are antiresorptive agents, can cause rare but serious dental problems such as ONJ when used for a long time. Therefore, when using these drugs, if dental procedure is required, careful monitoring before and after the procedure and consideration of changing the drug or changing the administration period may be necessary. Prof. Wonse PARK will be given an informative lecture on precautions when performing dental procedures for patients used these anti-resorptive drugs.
Estrogen is a most critical protective hormone for bones. Therefore, menopause, the abrupt cessation of estrogen, causes rapid bone loss and plays a major pathophysiology of postmenopausal osteoporosis together with aging per se. Therefore, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) was an important treatment option both the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis. However, due to various concerns related to HRT raised from the WHI study, the role of HRT itself in the treatment of osteoporosis has been greatly reduced. In this lecture, Prof. Kyoung Min KIM from Yonsei University will give a comprehensive lecture on the role of HRT in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.
